Welcome to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at Coronado

What is the goal for SEL at Coronado Elementary?

The goal for SEL at Coronado is to support students, teachers and the community in developing and maintaining a positive climate and culture that is inclusive and safe for all.

The goal is for students to feel connected, cared about and safe.

The goal is to use evidenced-based practices with fidelity to implement social emotional learning.

Why is SEL important for Coronado?

It increases academic achievement.

Picture of two cartoon children

It decreases problem behaviors.

It impacts classroom management.

It develops community school-wide.

It improves student, staff and family attachment to the school.

What is SEL?

SEL is based on the five core components of social and emotional learning outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) https://casel.org/Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Responsible Decision Making.

Who is our SEL?

Lorna McDonald LCSW CAC III is our SEL staff member. Last year in February Coronado Elementary completed the 5A SELS Variance Application which was approved by the district. The variance provides the school a hybrid position of Special Education Mental Health Provider and Social Emotional Learning Specialist.

How are we teaching SEL?

At Coronado Elementary we are using the evidence-based social emotional learning curriculum Second Step to instruct all students in developmentally appropriate social emotional skills. The district provided us the Second Step curriculum for Pre-school – Fifth Grade.

Second Step is an evidence-based curriculum. Studies have showed significant improvements in positive approach/coping, caring/cooperative behavior, suppression of aggression, and consideration of others with implementation of Second Step. Nearly three-quarters of teachers reported that the Second Step program helped their students during the implementation year, and 91.7 percent said that the Second Step program would help their students in the future. (Cooke, M. B., Ford, J., Levine, J., Bourke, C., Newell, L., & Lapidus, G. (2007). The effects of city-wide implementation of "Second Step" on elementary school students' prosocial and aggressive behaviors. The Journal of Primary Prevention, 28(2), 93–115.)

Our plan is that our hybrid Mental Health Provider/Social Emotional Learning Specialist will share the teaching of students with the General Education Classroom Teachers. The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:

  1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
  2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
  3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings.
  4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.

How can you help?

As parents and caregivers, you play a vital role in helping your students develop strong social skills. You can join https://www.secondstep.org with activation key SSP1 FAMI LY71 you will find resources and information on the Second Step program and get information about what your student is learning.

Thank you for supporting your student in learning the social-emotional skills that lead to success in school and in life.  If you have questions please ask Mrs. McDonald, Lorna.McDonald@jeffco.k12.co.us or 303-982-7580.
