Gifted & Talented
Coronado Elementary School provides programming for exceptional learners who require special provisions to meet their educational needs.
Coronado’s GT Center
Our Gifted and Talented (GT) center programming is made up of four "scoops."
Social and emotional programming
- Social-emotional support tailored to the needs of gifted learners is embedded into the programming at every GT center school.
- The GT department will provide counselors and professional learning for the center teachers on social and emotional supports for every GT center school.
Curriculum and programming
- GT centers will differentiate grade-level curriculum with enrichment, compacting, acceleration and extensions in all core content areas. Mathematics will be accelerated by one year in elementary GT center classrooms based on student data and needs. Middle School GT center mathematics follows Jeffco's math placement process.
- The GT department will be a resource to assist in programming decisions and professional learning. This can include data gathering and analysis.
Resources
- GT-specific supplemental resources are available at every center school to be utilized as informed by data.
- The GT department will provide ongoing professional learning to support centers in prioritizing, monitoring and coordinating resources.
Professional learning
- All GT center teachers attend relevant professional learning opportunities provided by the department throughout the school year. Ongoing job-embedded professional learning will occur with the support of the resource teacher and counselor at every GT center school.
- The GT department provides responsive, differentiated and sustained professional learning that reflects the needs of our center schools and improves learning outcomes for students. The department also provides adequate resources for accessing ongoing professional learning.

Gifted & Talented in Jeffco
The Jeffco Public Schools Gifted and Talented (GT) Department’s vision is to Actualize Learners’ Potential for gifted and high-ability learners through a focus on access, equity, inclusion and diversity. All students deserve an education that provides meaningful growth academically, socially and emotionally.
Each year, every second grader in Jeffco takes The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) which measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative and nonverbal questions. The results of this test inform teachers which students may be identified as gifted and talented.
What Is A Gifted Student?
GT students are learners between the ages of four and 21 whose abilities, talents or potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special educational programming. Children under five who are gifted may also receive early childhood special educational services.
Gifted students include students from all backgrounds who have exceptional abilities or potential. Gifted students are capable of exceptional performance, production or learning behavior and have one or more of these areas of giftedness:
Areas of giftedness
- Intellectual abilities
- Specific academic skills
- Creative or productive thinking
- Leadership abilities
- Visual arts, performing arts or musical abilities
- Physical skills
